Project Overview

DREAM Collaborative provided architectural design services for a new 25,000 sf lab fit-out in the Life Sciences Laboratory building (LSL) at the UMass Amherst Department of Biomedical Engineering. The LSL facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration and applied research to help shorten the gap between scientific innovation and technological advancement.

The project provides a state-of-the-art environment with open and collaborative laboratory space for LSL’s interdisciplinary research clusters engaged in cutting edge studies. Designed to encourage collaboration amongst researchers, the open and flexible laboratory space maximizes spontaneous opportunities for the exchange of ideas and brainstorming. In sharp contrast with labs of the past, the designs feature lots of natural light and views to the outdoors. The open lab space is located in close proximity to support spaces including general lab support, tissue culture and procedure spaces.

The program includes both single and shared office space along the perimeter to allow for dedicated quiet space. Conference space can be used for conference calls and team meetings, as well as for social space. A welcoming student lounge area and graduate student write-up area provide areas for contemplative reading, writing notes, and conducting impromptu meetings to maximize opportunities for collaboration and brainstorming.

Located in a LEED Gold building, the projects design focused on reducing the lab’s energy use while emphasizing safety and flexibility. Open labs, low-flow fume hoods, energy recovery AHUs and a continuous air monitoring system help to achieve these goals.
