I am George Floyd, My Sons are George Floyd

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen the best of humanity through acts of bravery, courage and selfless determination to help others. Still, the stubborn ugliness of racism persists and surfaced last week in one of the most disturbing ways that many of us have seen in our lifetime with the killing of George Floyd. As a black man, father, son, brother, friend and business leader I cry for my sons and with the rest of humanity. As a black-owned business, DREAM Collaborative is committed to eradicating racism and disparities for underrepresented groups and in particular for black people. I have the incredible privilege to lead one of the most diverse and talented design teams in Boston. At DREAM our #1 core value is Equity and the Greater Good. Within our team, I have  witnessed first hand what great things the power of diversity can accomplish when we engage in compassionate listening and address biases head on. 

Now more than ever we need our civic and religious leaders to join with the business community and commit to a sea change when it comes to systemic violence and aggression towards black lives.

Today, there is anger in the streets because Americans of all races and backgrounds feel wounded, and that black people in particular have not been heard for generations. I stand in unity with other business leaders who are committed to helping our employees and communities through this historic moment. I encourage all of us to act:

  • Listen to each other’s heartbreak with compassion and empathy
  • Make space for team members to process the current national issues
  • Review time-off policies especially as it related to the mental health impact of current events
  • Support team members in creating personal action plans to address biases 
  • Reach out to your elected officials to demand action on tangible steps to end systemic injustice and racism.

Now more than ever we need our civic and religious leaders to join with the business community to commit to a sea change when it comes to systemic violence and aggression towards black lives. Let’s tell the cynics boldly: the actions of a few do not define this country or humanity. Please reach out to your local government leaders and let your voice be heard for the change we want, for the sake of all humanity. And finally, I encourage you to treat your neighbor as you would like to be treated —  with dignity, kindness, and compassion.

During these times of extraordinary disruption, DREAM Collaborative remains steadfast in our belief that architecture should work toward the Greater Good. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, lines have been blurred and we’re seeing opportunities all around us to reimagine the way we live, work, and organize our society and our spaces. We are honored to play a part in the transition toward a renewed society that prioritizes well-being, equity, and innovation.

As partners, we’re bringing our curiosity and the diversity of our perspectives to conversations about how design and development will need to evolve in a post-COVID world. We’re convening panel discussions and reaching out to other minority and women-owned businesses to brainstorm solutions to the unique and compounded challenges we face. Most importantly, we’re committed to providing the highest level of service and support to our valued clients and partners in the community, who we know are also being pushed to the limits of their resources and ingenuity in order to thrive in this historic moment.
